Hello, my fellow Lebanese. It’s me, your friendly Green Patriot. I would like to talk about another topic that affect us all; Global Warming.

By definition, global warming is the continuing rise in the average temperature of Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. Global warming is caused by increased concentrations of greenhouses in the atmosphere, which is caused by deforestation and burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and charcoal.

An increase in global temperature causes sea levels to rise and the amount (and pattern!) of rain worldwide. The temperature has already increased an estimated 4 °C worldwide. That might not sound like much, but it is enough to put some animal and plant species in danger, change rain patterns, and create climate refugees.

Fortunately there is a way for us to mitigate global warming. We can fight it on two fronts: the first is by reducing our carbon dioxide emissions, and the second is by planting trees and plants. We can reduce our carbon dioxide emissions by way of burning fewer fossil fuels. The first thing that comes to mind when talking about this is…our cars.

If we drive around in our cars less and using renewable energy sources, we could reduce our carbon dioxide emissions and thus, prevent global warming. One of the ways you can reduce these emissions to plan your trips so that you don’t waste time (and therefore gas) on the road, the second is carpooling, another is the use of public transportation, and lastly…go ahead, walk if you can! Get some exercise, save some money, ride with your friends, and save your country. It all works.

Also, if you are interested in buying energy-saving hybrid cars, these too will help the environment. These cars save energy using different means. Some of these cars run partially on an electric motor, while others run on bioethanol or biodiesel, and reduce carbon emissions. In addition, the government is going to lower tariffs on hybrid cars. So it makes sense to buy one in all ways; financially and environmentally.

Other things that come to mind are how we use electricity in our homes. Because I have spent some time discussing renewable energy at home in another post, I won’t go into too much detail again. As for a quick recab; solar panels and solar water heating systems go a long way in preventing global warming.

Lastly (and probably the most fun!), is that we can prevent global warming by planting trees and plants. We can contribute to reforestation efforts carried out by Greenpeace and other environmental NGOs. We can even plant a few trees and plants in our summer village backyards. Go ahead, even a few plants on your balcony will help; they’ll make your house look nicer in the bargain too, I promise. My fellow Lebanese, our country needs us. Let’s fight the good fight and help save our country!
