On Saturday, March 31st, 2012,  “Earth Hour” will take place all over the world. An initiative coming from the global conservation organization World Wildlife Fund (WWF),  Earth Hour is marked every year on the last Saturday of March.  People are asked to turn off their lights and electronic devices for one hour between 8:30 pm  and 9:30 pm Beirut time, regardless of where they are. This is done in order to emphasize the need for sustainable energy. Indeed, even the U.N. building in Lebanon will be participating this year, along with many other major institutions around the world.

My fellow Lebanese, I think that participating in this intiative is critical, especially now that our ministers have committed our country to environmental disaster with their pathetic and ill-thought energy plans. It is time for us to show that we are aware of the need for sustainable energy, and to indicate that we know what will happen when all of our fossil fuel based resources are gone and we have developed nothing else. Indeed, the Earth Hour Initiative illustrates what will happen to the letter…we will have permanent “Lights Out.”

So let’s do it, Lebanon. Let us prove that we understand the need for sustainable energy, that we care about our future, and that we want policy initiatives that will take us in this direction.  We can do it, Lebanon!!!
