Hello, Lebanon. It’s me, your friendly Green Patriot. I have not-so-good news. Former Lebanese deputy Gebran Tawk is destroying Bcharreh’s ancient Cedar Forest in order to  create an outdoor venue for his son’s wedding.

It’s so good to know that his son’s wedding is worth destroying a site that is on UNESCO’s world heritage list, a cherished part of our environment, and committing an act that is illegal. The law indicates that  this site should be protected and no construction should take place within the vicinity of 500 square meters. However, in honor of the young man, a 3-day ceremony will take place with 3,000 people on once-sacred land.

My fellow Lebanese, this is a complete insult to us. Our politicians are desecrating our land for familial pomp and circumstance?! What right do they have to that? Lebanon was once 30% forest, and now it is less than 13%. We have lost much of it to construction, to war…but to WEDDINGS?!

This is unbelievable. We need to hold Gebran Tawk responsible and bring him to justice for what he has done. This is unacceptable, and we should not allow this to happen!!!
